Long Beach, Calif. - The Downtown Long Beach Associates (DLBA) today officially introduced six Segway units as part of the Downtown Guides Program, which provides safety and quality of life services to Downtown Long Beach businesses, residents and visitors. Mayor Bob Foster attended the kick-off event held at the Bubba Gump Shrimp. Co., praising the use of Segways by the Downtown Guides and by the Long Beach Police Department. The Downtown Guides serve as ambassadors, offering a variety of services including directions, recommendations and general information to visitors, residents and workers. “The addition of Segway devices to the Downtown Guide Program will significantly enhance the level of service provided by the Guides,” said DLBA President and CEO, Kraig Kojian. It will reduce response times and provide greater ease of mobility from one neighborhood to another as they patrol the Downtown for 12-18 hours per day. The elevated platform of each unit will also provide a better perspective from which to survey on-street activities.” The introduction of Segways to the Downtown Guide Program was made possibly by a partnership forged between the DLBA and Segway Outdoor. The Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. has also partnered with the organization to provide advertising support and is featured on custom-designed billboards installed on each unit. The Downtown Long Beach Associates is a non-profit organization operating on behalf of the property owners and tenants of the Business Improvement District. It is dedicated to the management, marketing, security, maintenance, advocacy, economic and community development of the assessment districts in cooperation with the City of Long Beach and the private sector.
