National Endowment for the Arts Funds Important Public Art Work Boston, MA – October 25, 2006 – A Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus memorializing Boston Children who were victims of urban violence is traveling through our neighborhoods. This moving work of art—Remembering Boston’s Children 1980-2005—was created through a grant from the NEA by Thomas Starr, Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Northeastern University, in association with the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute of Boston. The bus is a striking, tragic, and moving statement for Boston’s citizens. The color of a school bus, it is covered with children’s memories of the young friends and family members they lost to violence, subtexted by the short life spans they led: ‘He was cuddly’ 1999-2001, ‘He always brought home stray animals’ 1986-1998, ‘She was going to law school’ 1987-2005. The artist, Thomas Starr, uses graphic design to create culture and address social and civic issues. According to Starr, “These testimonies recall loving, positive, and cheerful aspects of the children’s lives. At first reading they present an uplifting addition to the urban landscape. When the reader realizes why these children are being represented, the work conveys its emotional civic message. The format of the bus—a mode of transportation that connects all classes and neighborhoods—is an ideal medium for moving this message through the entire city; These issues affect us all.” Out-of-home advertising company, Titan Worldwide, installed the artwork and is making the advertising space available through an in-kind donation. Titan President and CEO Donald R. Allman said, "We are proud to participate in projects that creatively demonstrate the tremendous potential of outdoor advertising to communicate important public messages." Clementina Chery, who lost a child to violence in 1993 and founded the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute in his name, notes that this moving work of art will help to advance the unique work of the Peace Institute in Boston. “Our community-based and school-based programs facilitate healing and reconciliation while fostering a greater understanding and mutual respect between peoples of diverse backgrounds and experiences. The bus is raising awareness; it is giving a voice to children survivors of homicide victims, and it is communicating the human loss to the entire city; it is addressing the present crisis at it recalls the past; it honors the victims, supports the survivors, celebrates the living, and cherishes the children.” Thomas Starr is Associate Professor of Graphic Design at Northeastern University. He focuses on projects that challenge public perceptions on critical societal issues such as gun violence, domestic violence, reproductive rights and AIDS.
